Dubai: To conserve energy during peak hours in Sharjah, authorities are urging residents to switch off electrical appliances and use electricity in a rational manner.

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) has chosen July 1, to hold the annual initiative ‘One Saving Hour’ from 2.30 to 3.30pm.

The time selected to mark the initiative in summer during the highest peak hours each year coincides with high demand for power and water, according to Sewa.

Dr Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of Sewa said the aim of the "One Saving Hour Initiative" is to promote the conservation culture and raise the awareness of the community about rational use of electricity and reduction of toxic emissions.

The initiative also intends to raise awareness and educate customers on the importance of avoiding the use of electrical appliances and devices during the peak hours.

Dr Al Leem pointed out that the public is be urged to switch off all unnecessary devices during the One Saving Hour.

The One Power Saving Hour is one of several initiatives launched by Sewa throughout the year to spread awareness amongst community members on conservation, protect the environment, and build a sustainable future for the emirate of Sharjah.

Appliances to avoid using during peak hours

These electrical appliances consume the most power in homes:

  • Irons
  • Washing machines
  • Dishwashers
  • Water heater

Residents are advised to adjust the air condition thermostat to 24 centigrade during peak times and switch off air condition units when leaving.
