The expected drop in borrowing costs is good news for both borrowers and investors, leading to increased consumer and business spending. Lower financing costs are likely to stimulate economic growth and drive demand for housing, contributing to wealth accumulation. However, experts suggest that the impact on gold prices may differ, as historically, gold tends to rise when interest rates fall due to its appeal during uncertain times. UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE: In the UAE, adherence to the Unemployment Insurance Scheme is imperative for workers, with financial penalties in place for non-compliance. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has implemented fines, with a Dh400 penalty for failure to register and a Dh200 fine for those who neglect periodic instalment payments. According to the MoHRE, 14 per cent of workers currently fall short of compliance. Encouragingly, the majority of UAE workers, over 6.7 million, have registered since the system's launch earlier this year. The fines act as a reminder to fulfill obligations promptly, as non-compliance may lead to administrative measures, including a denial of new work permits. The legal deadline for registration concluded in October 2023, emphasising the need for swift action. Subscribing to the UAE Unemployment Insurance Scheme in a timely manner not only shields individuals from penalties but also provides a crucial safety net in times of job loss. Compensation, payable for a maximum of three months, offers financial support, emphasising the scheme's significance as a vital resource during challenging employment situations. WINNING HAS BECOME A HABIT FOR UAE CRICKETERS: UAE cricket has been on the upward trajectory for the last two years and the good part is that the graph seems to heading the same path. The UAE under-19 team have built on the recent success achieved by the senior team and have booked the place in semifinals of the Asia Cup Under-19, defeating Test-playing nation Sri Lanka. It’s an important milestone for the Associate Nation against a country where the age-group cricket is of the highest standard in the continent. All praise for the players and the management for continuing to achieve success with the backing of the Emirates Cricket Board. HUGH GRANT TAKES ONE FOR THE HARRIED PARENTS AROUND THE GLOBE: We are accustomed to celebrities who glorify parenting and express their unconditional love for their children, claiming that they bring joy to their insular lives, but actor Hugh Grant isn’t one of them. In a recent interview, he was lamenting about his “joyless life,” insisting he felt “elderly” among his five children and that being tangled in family duties wasn’t always desirable. "I'm having zero fun. I'm drowning in children," he joked in that interview with People Magazine. While his gripe over being a harried parent might be said in jest, it strikes a raw nerve in all those parents who feel overwhelmed with their familial duties from time to time. Grant, who has five children from different partners, didn’t shirk from sugar-coating realities. Parenting is never easy, and if you live in the public eye, it gets even more complicated. Grant didn’t mince words, and we love him for such candor. To see celebrities joke about their vulnerabilities makes them more humane and accessible.
